The Kahungye Gorilla Family was habituated as part of the 2009–2010 expansion of gorilla tourism into Bwindi’s Rushaga sector, adding significant capacity to Uganda’s gorilla trekking programme at a time when global demand for permits was growing rapidly. The group established itself as one of the larger Rushaga families and has maintained a membership of approximately 17 individuals across the years since their habituation. What has made Kahungye particularly notable — and the subject of ongoing scientific interest — is the presence of multiple silverbacks within a single cohesive social unit.

The Multi-Silverback Structure

Most mountain gorilla families are led by a single dominant silverback who may tolerate the presence of subordinate males — blackbacks and younger silverbacks — but whose authority over breeding and group direction is uncontested. The Kahungye family’s multi-silverback structure is an exception to this pattern. Multiple fully adult silver-backed males coexist within the group, with a clear dominant male but with subordinate silverbacks who have established their own social positions and relationships with specific females. This creates a more complex social environment than a single-silverback family, and the interactions between the males — subtle deference gestures, spatial positioning, the careful avoidance of direct challenges — are visible and interpretable during trekking encounters.

The Trek Experience

Kahungye treks depart from Rushaga headquarters each morning. The terrain within their home range is typical of southern Bwindi — steep, forested, and requiring steady footing. Trek duration varies between two and five hours. The family’s 17 members and their tendency to spread across a broader area than smaller groups means that when contact is made, the landscape comes alive with gorilla activity on multiple levels of the forest simultaneously — ground-level foraging, mid-canopy juveniles, and the resting bulk of the silverbacks visible through the vegetation.

The hour with Kahungye tends to be the most behaviourally dense of any Rushaga family encounter. Rangers position visitors carefully relative to the dominant silverback’s position, and once the group is located and settled, the range of simultaneous activities visible across 17 individuals is extraordinary. Photography during a Kahungye visit requires constant attention and fast reactions — there is always something happening, often in more than one direction at once.

Best Time to Trek

June–August and December–February are peak dry season months and the most popular for Rushaga trekking. Wet seasons offer quieter permits and vivid forest atmosphere. Cool temperatures at Rushaga’s altitude require warm clothing at dawn throughout the year.
