Uganda’s Top 20 Endemic Bird Species: A Birder’s Priority List

Home / Travel News, Stories & Tips / Tales from the Mist / Uganda’s Top 20 Endemic Bird Species: A Birder’s Priority List

Uganda is one of the best birdwatching destinations in the world, recording over 1,000 species — more than any comparably sized country in Africa. But for visiting birders, the most compelling reason to choose Uganda over other East African destinations is the concentration of Albertine Rift endemic species found in the western highland forests. These birds exist nowhere else on Earth and make Uganda essential for any serious African birdwatcher.

Below is a priority list of Uganda’s top 20 endemic and near-endemic bird species for your 2027 safari planning. These are the birds that bring dedicated birders to Uganda specifically — species you cannot tick anywhere else.

1. African Green Broadbill

The tiny, brilliant green African green broadbill is one of Uganda’s most celebrated endemic birds. Found only in the Albertine Rift montane forests, it is most reliably seen at Bwindi’s Ruhija sector. Its combination of restricted range and extraordinary colouration makes it the ultimate Ugandan birding target.

2. Shelley’s Crimsonwing

The male Shelley’s crimsonwing glows deep red in the forest understorey at Bwindi. A Near Threatened Albertine Rift endemic, it requires dedicated searching in the Ruhija and Buhoma forest undergrowth.

3. Grauer’s Broadbill

One of Africa’s rarest birds, Grauer’s broadbill reaches the edge of its range in Uganda’s Albertine Rift forests. Classified as Vulnerable, each sighting represents a significant birding achievement.

4. Rwenzori Turaco

The Rwenzori turaco with its glossy green plumage and crimson wing flash is found in Uganda’s mountain forests including Bwindi. The red wing flash in flight is one of Uganda’s most spectacular birding moments.

5. Kivu Ground Thrush

The beautifully marked Kivu ground thrush — orange-bellied with a bold facial pattern — inhabits the forest floor at Bwindi. Near Threatened and range-restricted, finding it requires a specialist guide.

6. Papyrus Gonolek

A Vulnerable papyrus specialist, the papyrus gonolek with its black, red, and yellow plumage is restricted to papyrus swamps of the Lake Victoria basin. Mabamba Swamp near Entebbe is the most accessible site.

7. African Finfoot

The secretive African finfoot — with its orange-red lobed feet — inhabits forested rivers throughout Uganda. Difficult to see well, it is a high-value target for visiting birders on forest river trips.

8. Nahan’s Francolin

One of Uganda’s most endangered birds, Nahan’s francolin is restricted to lowland forest in Uganda and DRC. Budongo Forest is the primary Uganda location. Classified as Endangered.

9. Red-Faced Woodland Warbler

The distinctive orange-faced woodland warbler is an Albertine Rift endemic found at Bwindi and the Rwenzori foothills. It participates in mixed-species flocks in the forest understorey.

10. Stripe-Breasted Tit

A Rwenzori Mountain and Bwindi endemic, the stripe-breasted tit is a bold tit with black streaking on the white breast. Found in mixed-species flocks in montane forest at higher elevations.

11. Archer’s Ground Robin

The secretive Archer’s ground robin is a low-density forest floor species in Bwindi. Rarely encountered but highly valued by dedicated birders who put in the effort to find it.

12. Hartlaub’s Duck

The tree-perching Hartlaub’s duck is found on highland forest lakes and rivers around Bwindi. One of the most unusual ducks in Africa due to its arboreal habits.

13. African Pygmy Goose

The brilliantly coloured African pygmy goose is found on lily-covered lakes throughout Uganda. The male’s green and chestnut plumage makes it one of the most beautiful waterbirds on the continent.

14. Standard-Winged Nightjar

The breeding male standard-winged nightjar with its extraordinary wing pennants is one of Africa’s most bizarre and spectacular birds. Found in savannah woodland on night drives.

15. Black-and-White Casqued Hornbill

One of Bwindi’s defining birds, the casqued hornbill is large, conspicuous, and spectacular. Its noisy wingbeats and calls are part of the soundtrack of Uganda’s montane forests.

16. Great Blue Turaco

Africa’s largest turaco with extraordinary turquoise, yellow, and red plumage is found throughout Uganda’s western forests. One of the continent’s most spectacular birds.

17. Shoebill

Uganda’s most famous bird — the prehistoric-looking shoebill — is found at Mabamba Swamp and other papyrus wetlands. The single greatest bird sighting available in East Africa.

18. African Crowned Eagle

Africa’s most powerful eagle is found in Uganda’s forest areas. Spectacular display flights above the canopy and the impressive crest make it a must-see raptor.

19. Ross’s Turaco

The deep violet-purple Ross’s turaco with its yellow face and crimson wing flash is an Albertine Rift endemic at Bwindi and Kibale. One of Africa’s most beautiful birds.

20. African Green Pigeon

The brilliant green African green pigeon with its maroon shoulder patch and red and yellow bill is found throughout Uganda’s forests and woodlands. Conspicuous despite its green camouflage when feeding in fruiting trees.
