If flying is a serious barrier for you — whether due to fear, health conditions, or personal conviction — you may be wondering whether gorilla trekking Uganda is completely off the table. The honest answer: it is difficult, but it is not impossible. And for many aviophobes, Uganda’s position within East Africa means there are partial overland options worth understanding.
Uganda’s Geographic Position
Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa, bordered by Kenya to the east, Tanzania to the south, Rwanda to the southwest, the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, South Sudan to the north, and Lake Victoria to the south. From Europe, the Middle East, or Asia, reaching Uganda without flying requires crossing multiple international borders overland — a multi-day journey that involves bus, train, and ferry segments. From within East Africa, overland travel is a more realistic option.
Reaching Uganda Overland From Within East Africa
If you are already in East Africa — or are willing to take a ship to the east African coast — overland routes to Uganda are well-established. From Nairobi, Kenya, a direct coach service runs to Kampala via Eldoret and Malaba. The journey takes approximately 12 hours and is operated by several companies including Easy Coach and Modern Coast. The road is good, the border crossing at Malaba is routine, and the fare is around 25 to 40 USD. From Dar es Salaam or Arusha in Tanzania, overland routes pass through Rwanda or Kenya before entering Uganda. These journeys take one to two days and are entirely doable by public transport or private vehicle.
From Rwanda, crossing into Uganda is straightforward. The Cyanika or Katuna border posts are busy but manageable. Some gorilla trekking itineraries specifically combine Rwanda and Uganda, entering at one end and exiting at the other — an excellent approach for overland travellers who have already reached Kigali.
Reaching Uganda From Farther Afield Without Flying
If you are starting from Europe, the Americas, or Asia, reaching East Africa without flying is a major undertaking. Cargo ships cross from Europe to various East African ports — Mombasa in Kenya is the main hub. Journey times from European ports to Mombasa are approximately three to five weeks each way. The cargo ship route is not a standard tourist product and requires significant advance planning, limited berths, and considerable time. It is, however, done by committed overland travellers and by those with severe flight anxiety who refuse to fly under any circumstances.
Managing Flight Anxiety for the Uganda Journey
For many people who describe themselves as “scared of flying,” the fear is manageable with the right support rather than absolute. The flight from Entebbe to the Kigali Connection or direct to London is a relatively standard long-haul journey. If your flight anxiety is severe but you want to see the gorillas, consider: flying courses offered by airlines (British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and others run one-day fear of flying workshops); prescribed anxiolytics for the journey (consult your GP); choosing daytime flights; choosing direct routes that avoid multiple legs; and flying with a travel companion. Many people who describe themselves as too scared to fly have completed the journey to Uganda with preparation and support.
Domestic Travel Once in Uganda
Once you reach Uganda — whether by air or overland — there is no requirement to fly domestically. Bwindi is accessible by road from Kampala in seven to nine hours. Charter flights from Entebbe to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips near Bwindi reduce the road time to under an hour and cost approximately 300 to 500 USD, but they are entirely optional. Road travel to Bwindi passes through spectacular scenery — the Rift Valley, tea plantations, and the Kigezi highlands — and is itself a worthwhile part of the Uganda experience. Gorilla trekking Uganda is completely achievable without any domestic flights.
