Gorilla trekking honeymoon in Uganda: couples guide

A gorilla trekking honeymoon in Uganda is one of the more unusual options on the safari honeymoon menu — and one of the most quietly memorable. Bwindi delivers an experience that no resort or city honeymoon can match: an hour, four metres from a wild silverback, in a forest older than human civilisation.

This guide covers how to structure a Uganda honeymoon around the trek, the lodge choices that suit couples, and how to balance the active and the relaxed sides of the trip.

Why Uganda for a honeymoon

  • The gorilla trek is a shared, once-in-a-lifetime story you will tell for decades.
  • Lodges in Bwindi at the high end (Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, Bwindi Lodge, Buhoma Lodge) are romantic — fireplaces, forest views, candlelit dinners.
  • Beyond the trek, Uganda offers Lake Bunyonyi (the still-water lake honeymoon classic), Queen Elizabeth boat safaris, and an optional Zanzibar add-on for the beach week.
  • Permits are USD $700 cheaper than Rwanda — a real saving on a couples trip.

The classic 8-day Uganda honeymoon shape

  1. Day 1 — Entebbe arrival, lakeside hotel.
  2. Day 2 — fly to Kihihi airstrip, transfer to Bwindi lodge, evening rest.
  3. Day 3 — gorilla trek (the day).
  4. Day 4 — Lake Bunyonyi half-day, canoe at sunset.
  5. Day 5 — drive or fly to Queen Elizabeth, savannah game drive afternoon.
  6. Day 6 — Kazinga Channel boat safari (hippos, elephants on the bank, the river-honeymoon photo).
  7. Day 7 — fly to Entebbe, optional Zanzibar add-on or fly home.
  8. Day 8 — depart.

Lodge choices for honeymoons

For Bwindi specifically, three lodges stand out:

  • Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp — the only lodge inside the park boundary. Tents under the canopy, gorillas occasionally feed in the grounds. Top-end but truly distinctive.
  • Bwindi Lodge — perched above the forest with a sunset deck, twin claw-foot baths in the suites. The classic luxury choice.
  • Mahogany Springs — slightly more affordable, large suites with private decks, walking distance to the briefing point.

Outside Bwindi: Mihingo Lodge in Lake Mburo, Mweya Safari Lodge or Kyambura Gorge Lodge in Queen Elizabeth, Birdnest Resort or Bunyonyi Overland on Lake Bunyonyi.

The trek for couples

You will be in a group of up to 8 trekkers. Same gorilla family, same hour. The intensity of the experience is heightened by sharing it. Couples often arrive back at the lodge quiet, holding hands. Several of our clients have proposed mid-trek (rangers love it). If you want to do the same, brief us in advance — we coordinate a small surprise back at the lodge.

Photography

If photography matters to you, request a sector with open canopy (Buhoma’s Mubare, Habinyanja groups; Rushaga’s Bweza is reliable). Bring a 70-200mm lens and a small flash diffuser only — flash itself is not allowed close to gorillas. We can arrange a private photographer for the trek day if you want professional shots.

Honeymoon perks at lodges

Most luxury Bwindi lodges offer free perks for honeymooners on request:

  • Champagne at arrival.
  • Bath drawn with rose petals.
  • Private dinner setup on the deck.
  • Photo printed and framed during the stay.

Mention “honeymoon” at booking — these are standard, not paid extras.

Combining with Zanzibar

The most common Uganda honeymoon ends with 4–6 nights in Zanzibar. Direct flights from Entebbe to Stone Town are 4 hours, USD $400–600 each way. Beach lodges in Matemwe, Kendwa, and the southern coast are well-run and quiet. We can package the whole 14-day Uganda + Zanzibar trip if you want one operator end-to-end.

Cost expectations for two

For a 7-day Uganda honeymoon, mid-range to top-end:

  • Permits (2): USD $1,600 (peak) or USD $1,200 (low season).
  • Domestic flights: USD $700-1,000 per person.
  • Lodges (mid-luxury): USD $400-700 per couple per night.
  • Vehicles, drivers, meals, park fees: USD $1,500-2,500 total.
  • Approx total: USD $7,500-12,000 for two, peak season.

Frequently asked questions

Should we do Uganda only or combine with Zanzibar?
If your honeymoon is 10+ days, combine. If 7 days, Uganda alone is fuller and more memorable.

Are the lodges suitable for honeymoons even if we are not five-star spenders?
Yes — mid-range Bwindi lodges (USD $250–350 per night for two) are charming, well-staffed, and have just the right atmosphere.

Can we both trek with the same family?
Yes — request “same family permit” at booking. UWA places couples together unless you ask otherwise.

Is the trek too hard for one of us if the other is fitter?
Rangers route couples to families that match the less-fit member. Tell them honestly at the briefing.

What if rain affects the trek day?
The trek goes ahead in any weather. Rain photos can be unforgettable. Bring full waterproofs.
