No Flash Photography

Flash photography is strictly prohibited during gorilla encounters. Sudden bursts of light can startle gorillas, cause stress, and potentially provoke defensive behavior, especially from silverbacks. Flash can also interfere with natural interactions within the group.

Visitors must ensure that camera flashes are turned off before entering the forest and double-check settings on phones, cameras, and external equipment. Natural light photography is encouraged, and the forest environment often provides soft, atmospheric lighting ideal for wildlife images.

Maintain the Required Distance

Photographers must keep a minimum distance of 7 meters from the gorillas at all times. This rule protects both humans and gorillas by reducing the risk of disease transmission and minimizing stress.

If a gorilla approaches closer on its own, visitors are instructed to remain calm and follow the guide’s directions. Reaching out, moving closer for a better shot, or repositioning aggressively is not allowed under any circumstances.

No Sudden Movements or Chasing Shots

Photography should be done calmly and patiently. Sudden movements, running to reposition, or stepping quickly toward gorillas to capture a moment is forbidden. Gorillas interpret fast movements as threats, which can alter their behavior or cause unnecessary tension.

Guides position visitors strategically to allow clear viewing angles. The best photographs often come from remaining still and allowing gorillas to move naturally within the scene.

Keep Camera Sounds and Distractions Minimal

Camera noises such as loud shutter sounds, beeps, or mechanical clicks should be minimized. Phones and cameras should be set to silent mode where possible. Loud conversations, laughter, or calling out to others while photographing is discouraged.

A quiet environment allows gorillas to behave naturally and gives photographers better opportunities to capture authentic moments without disruption.

One Hour Limit for Photography

Visitors are allowed one hour with the gorilla family, and this includes all photography and observation time. The limit is strictly enforced to reduce stress on the gorillas and maintain their normal routines.

Photographers are advised to pace themselves, balance viewing with shooting, and avoid spending the entire hour behind a lens. Many guides encourage visitors to take moments to simply observe without a camera.

No Food, Tripods, or Large Equipment

Tripods, monopods, drones, and large photography rigs are not permitted during gorilla encounters. These items can obstruct movement, create hazards, and intimidate gorillas.

Food and drink are also prohibited in the presence of gorillas to prevent littering, disease transmission, and distraction. Cameras should be lightweight and easy to handle in dense forest conditions.

Follow Guide Instructions at All Times

Rangers and guides have final authority during the trek. They may restrict certain angles, ask visitors to lower cameras, or reposition the group based on gorilla behavior. These instructions are for safety and conservation, not to limit photography unnecessarily.

Ignoring guide instructions can result in removal from the trek and penalties, as rules are enforced by park authorities to protect gorillas.

Ethical Wildlife Photography

Responsible gorilla photography focuses on respect rather than intrusion. Images should reflect natural behavior without manipulation or interference. Gorillas should never be posed, surrounded, or pressured into movement for the sake of a photograph.

Ethical photography contributes to conservation awareness and ensures future generations can experience gorilla trekking as it exists today.
