How People with Limited Mobility Can Trek to See Gorillas

In both Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Uganda) and Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda), there is an incredible service known as the sedan chair—locally nicknamed the “African helicopter.” This is essentially a strong, comfortable seat mounted on support poles and carried by a team of four to eight trained porters.

How People with Limited Mobility Can Trek to See Gorillas — Instead of hiking the sometimes steep and muddy trails, you are gently carried through the forest until you reach the gorilla family. Once there, you can get out of the chair to sit or stand if you are able, or you can remain seated during your one-hour gorilla viewing. It is the exact same magical experience that walking trekkers enjoy.

The sedan chair service is available to anyone who requests it—whether due to age, injury, disability, or chronic health conditions—and must be booked in advance so the porters and equipment are ready on the trekking day.

Cost and Booking for Wheelchair/Sedan Chair Trekkers

The sedan chair service typically costs between $300 and $500 per trek, depending on the park, trail conditions, and the number of porters required. This cost is in addition to the standard gorilla trekking permit price—$800 in Uganda and $1,500 in Rwanda for international visitors.

It’s important to inform your tour operator well before your travel date about your mobility needs so they can coordinate with the park authorities to assign you to an easier-to-reach gorilla group and have the chair ready.

Accessibility at Lodges and Transport

Many lodges around Bwindi, Mgahinga, and Volcanoes National Park now offer accessible rooms, ramps instead of stairs, and ground-floor suites for travelers with mobility challenges. Safari vehicles can also be fitted with step-assist or lift devices for easier boarding. Staying close to the park gate is recommended so that your transfer on trekking morning is short and stress-free.

The Experience for Non-Walking Trekkers

Being carried through the jungle is an adventure in itself. The porters are skilled at navigating the terrain smoothly, and the chair is designed for stability and comfort. Once with the gorillas, you will be positioned for the best possible view while keeping the required 7-meter distance for conservation and safety. You can take photographs, watch the gorillas interact, and experience all the magic of this rare encounter without the physical strain of hiking.
