Kidepo Valley National Park: The Wildest Animals You Can See

Home / Travel News, Stories & Tips / Tales from the Mist / Kidepo Valley National Park: The Wildest Animals You Can See

Kidepo Valley National Park in Uganda’s remote northeast is different from every other park in the country. The landscape is drier, more dramatic, and wilder than anything in western or central Uganda. The wildlife includes species found nowhere else in Uganda — cheetah, greater kudu, Besia oryx, and roan antelope among others. And the atmosphere of genuine remoteness, with fewer visitors than any other Uganda national park, creates a safari experience that feels like stepping back to an earlier era of African wildlife.

In 2027 Kidepo is more accessible than ever before thanks to improved road infrastructure and regular flight connections to Apoka airstrip. But the park’s wild character remains intact. This is the Uganda that wildlife purists dream of — pristine, uncrowded, and full of surprises.

Animals Found Only in Kidepo Within Uganda

Greater kudu: The most spectacular antelope in Uganda — tall, grey with white body stripes and males with long corkscrew horns up to 180 centimetres. Uganda’s only population lives in Kidepo’s rocky terrain and riverine thickets.

Cheetah: Potentially the only Uganda park where this endangered cat still occurs. Sightings are not reliable but are possible on open game drives in the Narus Valley.

Besia oryx: These large, grey desert antelopes with long straight horns adapted for arid conditions occur in Kidepo’s drier sectors. A dramatic sight in the open savannah.

Roan antelope: One of Africa’s largest antelopes with distinctive face markings and backward-curving horns. Rare throughout Africa and present in Kidepo in small numbers.

Patas monkey: The world’s fastest primate, adapted for open savannah. Long-legged and capable of 55 kilometres per hour, it is absent from all other Uganda parks.

Wildlife Shared with Other Parks but Excellent Here

Lion: Kidepo has one of Uganda’s healthiest lion populations. Game drives in the Narus Valley regularly produce lion sightings, including large prides with cubs.

Elephant: Large herds move through Kidepo seasonally. Encounters are dramatic against the backdrop of the Morungole Mountains.

Buffalo: Large herds are common throughout the park. Old bulls with massive horns are a feature of the drier sections.

Giraffe: Rothschild’s giraffe was reintroduced to Kidepo and the population is growing. Seeing giraffes against the dramatic mountain backdrop is extraordinary.

Eland: Africa’s largest antelope is common in Kidepo. Large herds are regularly encountered, including old bulls with the distinctive dewlap.

Nocturnal Wildlife

Kidepo’s night drives produce an exceptional range of nocturnal species: spotted hyena, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, serval, African wild cat, aardvark (occasionally), genet, civet, and pangolin (very rarely). The dark skies of Kidepo, far from any light pollution, make night drives particularly atmospheric.

Bird Highlights

Kidepo’s 475-plus bird species include many dry-country specials: ostrich, secretary bird (occasional), Karamoja apalis (near-endemic), Abyssinian ground hornbill, fox kestrel, Abyssinian roller, lilac-breasted roller, and numerous raptors. The different bird community from western Uganda makes Kidepo essential for serious Uganda listers.
