GHEX permits allow up to four visitors to spend up to four hours with a gorilla family in the active habituation process, and while they cost more than a standard permit ($1,800 vs $800), they offer an encounter that is, by most accounts, even more intimate and extended than the standard one-hour trek. The Mgahinga option
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda’s second gorilla trekking location, has consistently lower demand than Bwindi and often has permits available on dates when Bwindi is fully sold out. Mgahinga’s three habituated gorilla families are part of the Virunga population whose territories cross into Rwanda and the DRC, which means that the gorillas are occasionally not on the Ugandan side of the border when trekking is scheduled — but the permit system accounts for this with a no-guarantee notification. An established operator’s waitlist is a genuine mechanism rather than a courtesy gesture — permits are returned to operators by cancelling visitors on a regular basis, and the waitlist processes those returns in booking order. The practical advice for visitors on a waitlist is to remain available to confirm within 24 hours of being offered a returned permit, since the same returned permit is typically offered to multiple waitlisted visitors sequentially and is claimed by the first to respond.
