New Year has many faces. Champagne in a city hotel. Fireworks over a harbour. A quiet dinner at home. Or something entirely different: the night of 31 December 2026 in a Bwindi forest lodge, listening to sounds that are nothing like a countdown clock, and the morning of 1 January 2027 walking into ancient rainforest to spend an hour with a family of wild mountain gorillas. If you are looking for a way to begin 2027 that will stay with you for the rest of the year — and probably the rest of your life — this is it.
Why Bwindi at New Year
The period between Christmas and New Year is one of Uganda’s peak trekking seasons. The dry season conditions make the forest more accessible, the gorillas are active, and the lodges near Bwindi offer a combination of comfort and genuine wilderness that is difficult to find at other holiday destinations. You are in a forest that is over 25,000 years old, in the company of a species that has existed for millions of years, marking the turn of a single human year. The perspective shift this creates is something that the usual New Year setting does not provide.
The gorilla permit costs $800 USD for international visitors in 2027. The hour you spend with the gorillas on New Year’s morning begins the year with an encounter that is genuinely irreplaceable — not available in any city, not reproducible in any other way. Many visitors describe the gorilla encounter as the most vivid and significant single hour of their year. Beginning 2027 with it sets a particular kind of tone.
Logistics for the New Year Period
Permits for late December 2026 and early January 2027 are in high demand and should be booked six months in advance at minimum. Lodge availability in the New Year period is also limited. If you are planning a New Year gorilla trek for 2027, the booking should ideally be made before July 2026. Your tour operator handles permit applications, lodge reservations, and the transfers between Entebbe and Bwindi.
A typical New Year itinerary includes arrival in Bwindi on 30 or 31 December, the gorilla trek on 1 or 2 January, and return to Entebbe for a flight home on 3 or 4 January. This format requires approximately four nights in Uganda — a compact but complete trip that works around most holiday leave schedules. The Best New Year Resolution
Most New Year resolutions are broken by February. A gorilla trek in Uganda is not a resolution. It is a commitment with a permit number, a lodge booking, and a date on the calendar. Book it in 2026, look forward to it, prepare for the walk, and begin 2027 in the forest with wild gorillas. No resolution is more likely to hold — or to matter more when it does.
