Updated

Ethiopian Airlines flies from Addis Ababa to Entebbe several times a day, usually three or four, and the flight takes about two hours. That makes Addis one of the easiest hubs for reaching Uganda from Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia.

Allow at least 2–3 hours for a connection. If your layover is long, between about 8 and 24 hours, Ethiopian can provide a free transit hotel. You can also break the journey with a stopover of a few days in Addis Ababa itself. This guide covers the connection, the transit and stopover options, and the paperwork you need for both countries.

Addis Ababa to Entebbe: Ethiopian Airlines Stopover Guide 2027

Why fly via Addis Ababa

Ethiopian Airlines is Africa’s largest carrier and a Star Alliance member. From Addis it links Entebbe with dozens of cities that have no direct flights to Uganda, including Washington, New York, Toronto, many European capitals, the Gulf, India, China and parts of South-East Asia. One-stop itineraries via Addis are often among the cheapest options to Entebbe, and if you hold status with another Star Alliance airline, such as Lufthansa, United or Air Canada, you can usually earn and use miles on the trip.

The trade-off is Bole International Airport itself. The new terminal is modern but very busy at peak connection times, when long security queues and crowded gates are common. A sensible connection time and some patience go a long way.

The Addis Ababa to Entebbe flight

Flights are scheduled through the day, with departures typically in the morning, around midday and in the evening, though exact times change by season. The flight is about two hours, westbound over the Ethiopian highlands and South Sudan, and you arrive at Entebbe International Airport on the shore of Lake Victoria. Book the whole journey on a single ticket so that your bags are checked through and the airline rebooks you if a delay makes you miss the connection.

Think about your arrival time in Entebbe. Most gorilla itineraries begin with an overnight in Entebbe, because driving to Bwindi takes most of a day and night driving in Uganda is best avoided. A morning or early-afternoon arrival gives you a relaxed first evening. A late-night arrival is fine as long as your hotel knows and your safari starts the day after. Our guide to getting from Entebbe to Bwindi covers the onward options.

Connection times at Bole

Ethiopian sells connections shorter than two hours, but given the queues at transfer security, 2–3 hours is more comfortable, and longer if your inbound flight comes from far away or has a record of delays. If you miss the connection on a through ticket, the transfer desk will rebook you, often on the next Entebbe flight the same day. That is one advantage of a route with several daily departures. Never book a separate ticket for the Entebbe leg unless you leave a very generous margin.

If you are travelling for a gorilla trek, keep a buffer day between your arrival and your trek date. Permits are for a fixed date and are not refunded if you miss them because of a delayed flight. Our guide on what to do if a delay threatens your trek explains your options.

Free transit hotel and stopovers

Passengers with a long connection in Addis, generally between about 8 and 24 hours, on a through Ethiopian ticket can usually get a free hotel room, meals, transfers and a transit visa. Conditions and eligible fares change, so confirm when booking and claim it at the transfer desk on arrival. Hotels and service vary, and at busy times there can be long waits for transport, but it is far better than a night on the terminal floor.

Stopping in Addis for a few days is also easy to arrange, often for little or no extra fare if booked as a stopover on the same ticket. Addis Ababa sits at about 2,350 m, which is a gentle warm-up for the hills of south-western Uganda. The National Museum is home to “Lucy”, the famous 3.2-million-year-old hominin skeleton, though the original is usually kept in storage with a cast on display. The city also offers the Merkato, one of Africa’s largest open-air markets, the Entoto hills above the city and excellent Ethiopian food and coffee.

Visas, yellow fever and paperwork

If you stay airside in Addis, you do not need an Ethiopian visa. To leave the airport for a stopover, most nationalities can apply for an Ethiopian e-visa online before travel, and transit hotel guests receive a transit visa arranged by the airline. For Uganda, apply online for an e-visa (US$50 single entry) or the East Africa Tourist Visa (US$100) if you are also visiting Rwanda or Kenya, and carry the printed approval.

Uganda requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate from all arriving visitors, and airlines may check it at check-in. Ethiopia may also ask for one if you pass through Addis after time in Uganda. See our guides to the yellow fever certificate and arriving at Entebbe Airport.
