Ugenda means “always moving” or “to move” in Kinyarwanda — and the rangers who track this family named it accurately. The Ugenda family covers a larger ranging area than most other habituated groups in Volcanoes National Park, which means the trek to reach them is highly variable. On the days they are close to the trailhead, the encounter is reached within an hour. On the days they have moved significantly overnight, the trek can extend to four hours or more. Visitors assigned to Ugenda should be prepared for any distance and should take the ranger’s assessment at the morning briefing as accurate guidance rather than a polite estimate.

Family Composition and Character

Ugenda is a medium-sized family with a social structure built around a dominant silverback whose mobility patterns define the family’s character. The high-ranging behaviour has been documented across multiple years and appears to reflect genuine individual preference rather than seasonal response — Ugenda moves more than other families regardless of time of year. The encounter itself, when you reach the family, is of the same quality as any other group: the hour in the forest with a habituated mountain gorilla family. The difference is the investment required to get there, which produces a particular satisfaction in visitors who complete the long trek.

Trek Details

Trek time: 1 to 4+ hours — the most variable of any family in Rwanda. Altitude: 2,400–3,200 metres depending on overnight position. Difficulty: moderate to challenging, dependent entirely on where the family spent the night. Visitors assigned to Ugenda should be honest with themselves about their fitness capacity and communicate any limitations to the ranger at the briefing. Porters are strongly recommended given the potential trek length.
