Ntambara is one of the more recently fully habituated families in Volcanoes National Park, and it has established a reputation for calm, accessible encounters that make it a reliable assignment for a range of visitor types. The family ranges in the Sabyinyo and Gahinga zone of the park, in terrain that is less steep than the Bisoke and Karisimbi approaches and more consistently accessible than the highly mobile Ugenda family. Visitors assigned to Ntambara typically describe an encounter that is unhurried and close — the family has reached the level of habituation where the visitor group is fully accepted as a neutral presence rather than a stimulus requiring attention.

Family Composition and Trek

Ntambara is a medium-sized family. The current dominant silverback manages the group with an authority that translates into the settled composure the encounter produces. Trek time: 1 to 2 hours. Altitude: 2,300–2,800 metres. Difficulty: moderate — comparable to the Sabyinyo approach and recommended for visitors who want a less physically demanding trek without being assigned to the most frequently visited Sabyinyo family.
