Bwenge means “wisdom” or “intelligence” in Kinyarwanda. The family ranges on the slopes of Mount Muhabura — the easternmost of the main Virunga volcanoes, whose summit at 4,127 metres is the highest regularly accessible peak for climbers in the park. The Muhabura sector of Volcanoes National Park is less frequently assigned than the Sabyinyo and Bisoke areas, which gives Bwenge encounters a quieter quality — fewer visitor groups in the area on any given day, less infrastructure at the trailhead, and the particular character of the eastern volcanic slopes that differ from the rest of the park in vegetation and terrain.
Family Composition and Trek
Bwenge is a medium-sized family led by a dominant silverback. The family has been habituated for a substantial period and produces consistent, settled encounters. The Muhabura approach involves crossing the park’s eastern zone, which requires a longer drive from Kinigi than the central Sabyinyo trailhead. Trek time once in the forest: 1 to 2.5 hours. Altitude: 2,500–3,200 metres. Difficulty: moderate to challenging. The eastern slopes of Muhabura involve a different forest character from the Bisoke and Karisimbi sectors — drier in some areas, with different plant communities at the transitional zone between bamboo and montane forest.
