Rwenzori Natural Honey – Wild Forest Honey from Uganda

Rwenzori Natural Honey is one of Uganda’s most extraordinary food products – raw, unprocessed wild honey harvested by traditional beekeepers on the slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains. Dark, intensely flavoured, and rich in the diverse wildflower nectars of one of Africa’s most biodiverse mountain ecosystems, it is a taste unlike any honey you have encountered before.

Wild Beekeeping in the Rwenzori

Traditional beekeeping has been practiced on the Rwenzori slopes for generations. Local beekeepers construct cylindrical log hives from hollowed tree trunks and hang them high in the forest canopy, allowing wild bee colonies to establish themselves naturally. Honey is harvested by hand – typically at night using smoke to calm the bees – and extracted without heating, preserving all its natural enzymes, pollen, and flavour compounds.

The bees forage across the extraordinary botanical diversity of the Rwenzori foothills and the montane forest zone, collecting nectar from hundreds of species of wildflowers, herbs, and forest trees. The result is a complex, dark honey with a depth of flavour that reflects the richness of the mountain ecosystem.

Health Properties

Raw unprocessed honey retains all its natural antibacterial enzymes, antioxidants, and trace minerals. Rwenzori forest honey has been used in traditional medicine by mountain communities for generations to treat wounds, coughs, and digestive issues.

Buying and Bringing Home

Rwenzori honey is sold in glass jars at Kampala organic markets, specialist food shops, and through fair-trade cooperatives. A 500g jar costs $8-$15 USD. Check airline regulations for carrying honey in hand luggage – it is generally permitted in checked baggage.
