Kitenge Fabric Scarf – Bold African Colour from Uganda
The kitenge fabric scarf is Uganda’s most colourful and versatile souvenir. Made from Uganda’s iconic kitenge — a bold, wax-printed cotton fabric beloved across East and West Africa — these scarves bring the vibrant energy of African textile culture to your wardrobe.
What Is Kitenge?
Kitenge (also spelled chitenge) is a thick, wax-printed cotton fabric featuring bold geometric and organic patterns in vivid colour combinations. Originally derived from Indonesian batik printing traditions introduced to East Africa in the 19th century, kitenge has become a defining fabric of African identity and fashion. In Uganda, it is worn by both men and women for everyday clothing, formal occasions, and cultural ceremonies.
Kitenge patterns are produced using a wax-resist printing process that creates crisp, bold designs with slightly crackled textures at the wax boundaries — the hallmark of authentic African wax print fabric.
Kitenge Scarf Styles
- Long rectangular scarves (180 x 50 cm) — versatile for wearing as a head wrap, neck scarf, or beach cover-up
- Square scarves — ideal as pocket squares or small wraps

How to Wear a Kitenge Scarf
Kitenge scarves can be worn as a head wrap, tied as a sarong, used as a baby carrier wrap, or simply worn as a decorative neck scarf. Their lightweight cotton construction makes them ideal for travel.
