Karamojong Grass Basket – Colourful Uganda Tribal Craft

The Karamojong grass basket is one of Uganda’s most vibrant and distinctive traditional crafts. Made by the Karamojong people of northeastern Uganda using dried grass and palm leaves, these baskets are renowned for their bold geometric patterns and vivid colour combinations.

The Karamojong People and Their Craft

The Karamojong are a semi-nomadic agro-pastoral people who inhabit the Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda — a semi-arid landscape dramatically different from the lush forests of the south. Despite the challenging environment, they have developed rich artistic traditions, and their basketry is among the finest in East Africa.

Women weave the baskets using coiling and twining techniques, working with dried grass stems, palm leaves, and sisal. Natural and commercial dyes are used to create patterns that often carry cultural meaning — symbolizing cattle, warriors, or the stars and seasons that guide nomadic life.

What Makes Them Special

  • Bold, geometric patterns in bright yellows, reds, greens, and blues
  • Tightly woven construction that is extremely durable
  • Each pattern design is unique to the individual weaver’s tradition
  • Functional as storage containers, serving trays, or wall décor

Where to Buy

Karamojong baskets are sold at the Uganda Arts and Crafts Village in Kampala, at Entebbe market stalls, and through fair-trade cooperatives that work directly with Karamoja weavers. Prices range from $10 to $45 USD depending on size.
