Gorilla Batik Print – Traditional Ugandan Fabric Art

A gorilla batik print is one of Uganda’s most striking and distinctive souvenirs. Using the ancient wax-resist dyeing technique known as batik, local artists create vivid fabric images of mountain gorillas, jungle canopies, and Bwindi wildlife that are both beautiful and culturally meaningful.

What Is Batik?

Batik is a textile art form in which hot wax is applied to fabric in a pattern, then dyed. The wax resists the dye, leaving the original fabric colour in the waxed areas. Once the wax is removed, the result is a crisp, detailed image with rich colour contrasts. Ugandan batik artists have adapted this technique to portray local wildlife, landscapes, and cultural scenes.

Gorilla Batik Designs

Popular gorilla batik prints include:

  • Silverback gorilla portraits set against dense jungle green
  • Mother and infant gorilla bonding scenes
  • Gorilla family groups in their natural habitat
  • Abstract gorilla silhouettes with African geometric borders

Each piece is made by hand, meaning no two batiks are exactly alike. They are sold as flat fabric pieces, framed wall art, or made into cushion covers and table runners.

Buying and Displaying

Gorilla batik prints are typically sold on cotton or silk fabric, ranging in size from A4 print-sized to large wall panels. Framing a batik is easy — most standard frames accommodate common sizes. Prices range from $10 to $60 USD.

Look for batiks at craft cooperatives near Bwindi, at Kampala’s Owino Market, and at the Uganda Arts and Crafts Village on Dewinton Road.
