African Wooden Bowl – Hand Carved Uganda Homeware
An African wooden bowl from Uganda is a functional piece of home décor that tells the story of Uganda’s remarkable wood-carving tradition. Hand-turned and carved from dense native hardwoods including mvule (African teak), ebony, and rosewood, each bowl is unique in shape, grain pattern, and finish – a natural object shaped by skilled hands.
Uganda’s Wood-Carving Heritage
Wood carving is one of Uganda’s oldest craft traditions, practiced in communities throughout the country. In the Buganda Kingdom, master carvers held prestigious positions at court, creating royal furniture, ceremonial objects, and household items for the Kabaka and his chiefs. Today the tradition continues in cooperatives and individual workshops where carvers produce everything from small figurines to large furniture pieces.
The best Ugandan carvers use only locally sourced hardwood, ensuring the sustainability of their material while showcasing the extraordinary variety and beauty of Uganda’s native tree species.
Bowl Styles
- Turned bowls – perfectly round, lathe-turned bowls with smooth interior and exterior
- Hand-carved oval bowls – irregular, organic shapes that follow the natural form of the wood
- Footed bowls – raised on a carved pedestal, ideal as a centrepiece fruit bowl
- Lidded bowls – with a carved fitting lid, for storing small items
Wood and Finish
Mvule bowls have a warm golden-brown tone with a fine, straight grain. Ebony bowls are jet black and extremely dense. All bowls are finished with natural beeswax or food-safe linseed oil, making them safe for serving food. Prices range from $15 to $60 USD depending on size and wood type.
