“Kidepo Valley is the most remote major wildlife park in East Africa. The road is long. The reward is a savannah that feels like it is being seen for the first time.”
Uganda’s hidden north and the world’s most protected apes
Kidepo Valley National Park sits in Uganda’s far northeast, on the border with South Sudan, at the end of roads that most safari vehicles never travel. It is consistently rated by safari professionals as one of Africa’s top ten national parks and it is also, by significant margin, the least visited park of that quality on the continent. The reason is simple: it is far from everything. Kampala is nine to ten hours by road. The airstrip at Apoka is served by charter flights but not scheduled services. The infrastructure is limited. And the wildlife — cheetah, caracal, aardwolf, Striped hyena, roan antelope, and species that exist in Uganda only in Kidepo — requires the remoteness that has protected it.
This ten-day safari adds Kidepo to the gorilla trekking circuit and connects them via Murchison Falls — a routing that covers the full north-to-south sweep of Uganda’s wildlife, from the semi-arid savannah of the Karamoja region to the ancient equatorial forest of the southwest. Visitors who complete this itinerary have seen a Uganda that the majority of tourists who come for the gorillas alone never encounter.
Truly Iconic Highlights
- Kidepo Valley National Park — cheetah, caracal, roan antelope, eland, and Burchell’s zebra in a savannah that receives fewer visitors per year than some African parks receive in a single morning
- Murchison Falls — the Nile forced through seven metres of rock, the Nile boat cruise, lion on the northern circuit
- Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi — the anchor of the entire itinerary and the reason Uganda deserves the full length of this safari
- The complete north-south ecological range of Uganda — Kidepo’s semi-arid northeast through Murchison’s riverine savannah to Bwindi’s ancient montane forest
Detailed Itinerary — 10-Day Kidepo and Gorilla Safari
Days 1–2: Entebbe to Kidepo Valley (fly or drive)
Charter flight from Entebbe to Apoka airstrip in Kidepo takes under two hours and is the recommended option — it removes a nine-hour road journey through northern Uganda and deposits you at the park headquarters in time for an afternoon game drive. The road option is feasible with an overnight stop in Gulu and is chosen by visitors who want the northern Uganda landscape as part of the experience. Either way, you arrive at Apoka with the Narus Valley spread in front of you and the evening game drive revealing the scale of what you have come to see.
Days 3–4: Full Kidepo Game Drives
Two full days in Kidepo — morning and afternoon game drives across the Narus Valley and into the Narus floodplain where the dry season concentrates wildlife around the permanent water sources. Cheetah sightings are possible on the open savannah; Kidepo holds Uganda’s only confirmed resident cheetah population. African wild dog have been recorded. Caracal and aardwolf are present but nocturnal; night game drives are available with prior arrangement. The bird list includes species found nowhere else in Uganda — the ostrich, the Karamoja apalis, the white-crested turaco. Two days is the minimum to begin understanding what Kidepo contains; every additional day rewards you further.
Day 5: Transfer to Murchison Falls
Charter flight or road transfer to Murchison Falls National Park — a journey that crosses northern Uganda and descends toward the Nile. Arrival in time for an evening game drive on the northern circuit.
Day 6: Murchison Falls — Game Drive and Nile Cruise
Morning game drive across the Murchison northern circuit — lions, Rothschild’s giraffe, elephants, and buffalo in a savannah that feels fundamentally different from Kidepo’s semi-arid character. Afternoon Nile boat cruise to the base of Murchison Falls — the roar growing from a low thunder to something that fills your chest as the boat approaches the base of the seven-metre gap.
Days 7–8: Drive South to Bwindi
Two-day journey south from Murchison to Bwindi — through Fort Portal, the crater lakes, the Kibale Forest corridor, and up into the Kigezi highlands. An overnight in Fort Portal or the crater lakes area breaks the journey and allows you to arrive at Bwindi rested for the gorilla morning.
Day 9: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
The gorilla morning. After nine days in the field — Kidepo’s open savannah, Murchison’s riverine plains, the long drive through western Uganda — the forest entry at Bwindi has an accumulated weight to it. You have seen Uganda in its full range. The gorilla encounter in the closed ancient forest is the final act of a journey that has covered the ecological breadth of the country. The silverback in the understory is the punctuation mark at the end of a very long, very complete sentence.
Day 10: Return to Entebbe
Long return drive to Entebbe. Ten days. Uganda from its most remote corner to its oldest forest. No shortcut version of this country makes it into a single week. The one that does takes ten days and leaves nothing essential out.
