Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of Uganda’s smallest national parks and one of its least visited. It occupies the Ugandan portion of the Virunga Massif — the extinct and dormant volcanic range whose three Ugandan peaks (Muhavura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo) are the same chain that continues into Rwanda as Volcanoes National Park and into DRC as Virunga National Park. One habituated gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group, lives in Mgahinga. They sometimes cross into Rwanda and DRC, following the volcanic habitat without concern for the political boundaries that divide it, but they spend most of their time in the Ugandan section and are reliably available for trekking on most days.
From Kigali, Mgahinga is closer than Bwindi — approximately three hours by road through the Cyanika border crossing. The permit costs $800 versus Rwanda’s $1,500 for Volcanoes National Park. The Nyakagezi family is habituated and available. The golden monkey population in Mgahinga’s bamboo zone offers an additional primate encounter on the same day or the following morning. For visitors based in Kigali who want the Virunga gorilla experience at the Uganda permit price, this is a different and often better option than the longer Bwindi drive.

Day 1: Kigali to Mgahinga via Cyanika Border

Drive north through Rwanda to the Cyanika–Bunagana border crossing, which brings you into Uganda at the southern base of the Virunga range.
