The Rugendo family is one of the most historically significant mountain gorilla groups in the DRC sector of Virunga National Park — and one of the most tragic. In July 2007, militia gunmen entered the park and shot and killed four members of the Rugendo family in what became one of the most publicised incidents of gorilla killing in the history of mountain gorilla conservation. The victims included Senkwekwe, the family’s dominant silverback, who was shot at close range. The killings drew international media coverage and focused global attention on the conflict that was destroying one of the world’s most important conservation areas.

After the 2007 Killings

The surviving Rugendo family members were monitored intensively by Virunga NP rangers and the Gorilla Doctors programme in the immediate aftermath of the killings. The family regrouped under a new silverback structure and the surviving females and juveniles maintained their cohesion through a period of extreme instability in the park. The Rugendo family’s survival through the period of conflict that followed 2007 is a testament to the commitment of the Virunga ranger force — over 200 of whom have been killed in the line of duty since the park was established.

The Family Today

When Virunga National Park is open to gorilla trekking, the Rugendo family is one of the assigned groups. The family has rebuilt its numbers since 2007 and the encounter, for visitors who know the history, carries the particular weight of seeing a group that survived deliberate persecution and continued. The families in Bwindi and Volcanoes that visitors trek in Uganda and Rwanda are in many ways a parallel story of survival through threats — what makes Rugendo different is that the threat was direct, documented, and catastrophic, and the family survived it.

Current status: Always verify current Virunga NP security and park access before planning a DRC gorilla trek. Rugendo trekking is available only when the park is open and the sector is accessible to visitors.
