Uganda Rwenzori Mountain Tea – Single Estate Tea

Uganda Rwenzori Mountain Tea is one of East Africa’s finest and least-known teas – a high-altitude single-estate black tea grown on the slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains, known as the Mountains of the Moon, in western Uganda. Rich, smooth, and deeply aromatic, it is a taste of one of Africa’s most dramatic landscapes.

About the Rwenzori Mountains

The Rwenzori Mountains straddle the Uganda-DRC border and are home to some of Africa’s highest peaks, glaciers, and the most extraordinary Afro-alpine vegetation zone on the continent. The mountain slopes at 1,500-2,200 metres altitude, with their rich volcanic soils, cool temperatures, and high rainfall, create ideal conditions for growing premium tea.

Tea estates on the Rwenzori foothills have been producing high-quality black tea for decades, but Uganda’s tea remains relatively unknown outside East Africa – making it a genuinely special find for tea lovers visiting the region.

Flavour Profile

Rwenzori Mountain Tea is a classic East African black tea with a clean, bright, golden-red liquor and a smooth, full-bodied flavour with notes of honey, fresh grass, and warm spice. It brews best with boiling water and is wonderful drunk plain, with milk, or as a chai base with spices.

As a Souvenir

Packaged in attractive foil pouches or wooden boxes featuring Ugandan wildlife artwork, Rwenzori Mountain Tea makes an elegant and lightweight gift. A 100g box costs $6-$12 USD. Available at Kampala supermarkets, Entebbe Airport shops, and some national park lodges.
