Gorilla Keychain – Handcarved Wood Souvenir from Uganda
The gorilla keychain is one of Uganda’s most popular small souvenirs – a miniature handcarved wooden gorilla attached to a metal keyring. Lightweight, affordable, and easy to pack, it is the perfect reminder of your Bwindi gorilla trekking experience.
Craftsmanship
Each gorilla keychain is individually carved by hand from offcuts of mvule or ebony hardwood by artisans in the villages surrounding Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Using small knives and hand tools, carvers shape a detailed gorilla figurine – typically a seated silverback – no larger than 5 cm. The wood is sanded smooth and finished with natural oil to bring out its grain.
Because each piece is carved by hand rather than machine-made, no two keychains are exactly alike. Minor variations in posture, finish, and wood tone make each one unique.
