Copper Wire Beaded Jewelry – Handmade Uganda Craft
Copper wire beaded jewelry from Uganda is a contemporary craft form that has grown rapidly in popularity among tourists seeking something original and affordable. Using thin copper wire coiled and woven together with glass beads, bone, and natural seeds, Ugandan artisans create lightweight, intricate bracelets, rings, earrings, and pendants that are entirely handmade.
The Craft
Copper wire jewelry-making emerged in Uganda as urban artisans began experimenting with inexpensive electrical copper wire as a substitute for expensive sterling silver and gold. The technique involves coiling, twisting, and weaving fine copper wire around beads and between itself to create open, lacy structures that are surprisingly strong and flexible.
The warm orange-red tone of raw copper pairs beautifully with the earthy tones of glass seed beads, complementing the colours of Uganda’s landscape and wildlife.
