“Three parks. Three ecosystems. The Nile, the savannah, the ancient forest. The gorillas at the end. This is the complete Uganda safari.”

The full Uganda circuit. Nothing left out.

Uganda’s three flagship wildlife destinations represent three completely different ecosystems within a country the size of the United Kingdom. Murchison Falls National Park in the north: the Victoria Nile carving through the Rift Valley escarpment, Rothschild’s giraffe on the northern plains, the most powerful waterfall on earth compressed into seven metres of rock. Queen Elizabeth National Park in the west: the Kazinga Channel connecting two Rift Valley lakes, the Ishasha tree-climbing lions, the greatest hippo concentration in Uganda and a bird list that exceeds 600 species. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the southwest: the oldest forest in Africa, 500 mountain gorillas, 23 Albertine Rift endemic bird species, and the one hour that changes how you think about wildlife forever.

The classic three-park circuit connects these three destinations in a logical north-to-south or south-to-north routing that takes twelve days and uses the journey between parks to show you the full landscape range of western Uganda. It is the itinerary that safari operators recommend to first-time Uganda visitors who have enough time and the budget for the gorilla permit. It is also the one that visitors who have only done Bwindi come back to complete.

Truly Iconic Highlights

  • Murchison Falls — the Nile compressed to seven metres, the boat cruise to the base, the cliff view from the top, the northern plains game drives
  • Queen Elizabeth — the Kazinga Channel boat cruise, the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, the Kasenyi plains wildlife with Rwenzori backdrop
  • Bwindi — the gorilla encounter, the Batwa cultural walk, the forest nature trail through 25,000-year-old canopy
  • The drive between parks — the western Rift Valley escarpment, the Fort Portal crater lakes, the Kigezi highlands — as much a part of the Uganda experience as the parks themselves

Detailed Itinerary — Classic 3-Park Uganda Safari

Day 1: Entebbe to Murchison Falls National Park

Drive northwest from Entebbe — through Kampala, into the northern flatter country, and through the park gate to your lodge on the Nile bank. Six to seven hours. Afternoon game drive on the northern circuit as you arrive.

Day 2: Murchison Falls — Game Drive and Nile Boat Cruise

Full morning game drive across the northern circuit: lions, Rothschild’s giraffe, elephants, buffalo, Jackson’s hartebeest. Afternoon launch trip on the Nile to the base of Murchison Falls — the roar of the falls growing as the boat approaches, the hippos on every sandbank, the crocodiles at the water’s edge, the African fish eagles overhead.

Day 3: Top of the Falls and Budongo Forest (Optional Chimp)

Morning hike to the top of Murchison Falls for the view from above — standing at the point where the entire Victoria Nile forces itself through seven metres of rock. Afternoon optional chimpanzee trekking in the Budongo Forest sector on the park’s southern edge. Drive south toward Queen Elizabeth begins in the late afternoon.

Day 4: Kibale Forest and Fort Portal Crater Lakes
