Gorilla trekking in Nkuringo sector -Nkuringo sector is located in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable national park. The sector is part of the 4 gorilla trekking sectors in Bwindi. Buhoma, Ruhija and Rushaga are the other 3 gorilla trekking sectors. Gorilla families in Nkuringo sector

Nkuringo sector has 3 gorilla families, 2 of which is already habituated and the other in the process of habituation. Gorilla trekking in Nkuringo is more fascinating because it gives you the chance to either immerse in gorilla trekking or gorilla habituation.

Nkuringo family group.

This family group was the first gorilla family to be habituated Nkuringo sector in 1997. The family is made up of 11 members. 2 silverbacks, 2 adult females, 1 black back, 2 infants and 3 juveniles. The 12th Rafiki was in June 2020 by poachers. The family at one time had up to 17 members but over a period of time, others dispersed to form other families. They usually foliage outside the park

Bushaho family group

Bushaho gorilla family is believed to be a break away from the Nkuringo family. As the silverbacks matured, they started their own family hence the Bushaho family. Bahati is the dominant silverback of this gorilla family. This gorilla family still resides in the Nkuringo sector and has 8 members. 1 silverback, 2 adult females, 2 juveniles, 1 infant and 1 black back.

Bikingi gorilla group

The Bikingi gorilla group is exclusively for gorilla habituation. As the Mishaya gorilla group disintegrated, some of the unhabitutated gorillas formed this 15 strong family. Since the gorilla family is still under habituation, the leader is not ye confirmed. This gorilla family has 1 silverback, 5 adult females, 2 juveniles, 5 infants and 2 sub-adults.

Gorilla Trekking in Nkuringo sector.

The Nkuringo sector is famous for the Nkuringo gorilla family. With 19 members, it’s believed to be the most interesting. It’s however imperative to note that the gorilla trek is the most strenuous of all gorilla treks. On the bright side, gorilla trekking in Nkuringo sector rewards you with great views of the Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira in Congo. There are great opportunities of great photography.

How to get to Nkuringo sector.

Nkuringo sector can be accessed through the Kabale-Kisoro road. Through the Bwindi forest, you can access the sector. Fly in through Kisoro and take a car ride through the scenic hills of Kisoro and Kabale to get to Nkuringo. If you are coming from Queen Elizabeth, you can access Nkuringo through the Ishasha sector, through Kihihi and Buhoma.
