Buhoma sector is the busiest and most popular gorilla trekking sector in Uganda. The sector is located in the northern part of Bwindi impenetrable national park. The sector offers stunning views of the forests and the amazing scenery of the tea plantations in the local communities.

Buhoma sector was the first sector that was opened for gorilla trekking in 1993. In Uganda, the first sector that conducted gorilla trekking was Buhoma sector. This makes it famous as the pioneer sector for gorilla trekking. With 4 habituated gorilla families, Buhoma sector dispatches more tourists than any other sector in Bwindi. These gorilla families include; Mubare group, Rushegura gorilla family, Habinyanga group and Katwe gorilla group. Buhoma Accessibility

Buhoma sector is well located in relation to other safari destinations. The Ishasha sector (Famous for the tree climbing lions) in Queen Elizabeth national park is just 3 hours away. The sector is also 4 hours from Queen Elizabeth national park headquarters in Mweya. Enjoy amazing wildlife safaris and boat cruises on the Kazinga channel in Queen Elizabeth national park after gorilla trekking. If you wish to fly, the Kihihi airstrip is just close by the sector. If you choose to travel by road, a couple of routes are available.

Terrain

Compared to other sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable national park, Buhoma sector is not as hilly as other sectors. The other gorilla trekking sectors are near the Kigezi highlands making the trek more strenuous. Buhoma gorilla trekking is less strenuous. With altitudes of up to 1350 meters, the Buhoma sector is the best sector for gorilla trekking if you aren’t up for the strenuous hike into the forest.

Volunteering activities.

The Buhoma sector has some conservation projects with the national park. These projects will give travelers a chance to engage in any projects. These projects target women and children’s rights and gorilla conservation. You can combine your gorilla trekking safari with some volunteering activities.

The Bwindi forest was once home to the Batwa indigenous people. After the allocation of the park, communities were relocated to the forests around the park.
