Murchison falls National Park is Uganda’s largest conservation area. The park hosts amazing wildlife species. These range from the big cats to the small species. The mighty Murchison falls are located along the Nile in the park.
Chimpanzees can be trekked in the Kibale forest national park. Known as the primate capital of the world, Kibale has 13 primate species to be encountered in this tropical forest. 8 day Uganda gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris detailed itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Murchison falls national park and trek rhinos en route
This Uganda safari tour begins with a briefing from your driver/guide. This briefing will give you an overview and expectations of the safari. You will have an early departure for Zziwa rhino sanctuary. At Zziwa, we will have breakfast before embarking on the rhino trek. With over 35 members, you are sure to have amazing sightings of some of the rhinos. After a safety briefing, you will trek through the savanna grasslands to locate the rhinos. Once in your sights, enjoy breathtaking moments observing them and taking photos and videos.
Proceed to Murchison falls national park through Masindi town. We will head straight to our accommodation and check in. After freshening up, we will venture onto the savanna plains for an evening game drive. In a customized safari vehicle, you will have panoramic views of the plains and its wildlife. Some of the wildlife to encounter include; lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, hyenas, antelopes and many more. Return to the lodge for a relaxing evening.
Day 2: Game drive and boat cruise in Murchison falls
Commence your day with an early breakfast before embarking on another game drive. This second game drive gives us an opportunity to see the wildlife you may have missed the previous day. This game drive is more relaxed as we will have more time viewing and observing the wildlife. This game drive lasts up to 5 hours. In preparation for the afternoon boat cruise, we will return to the lodge for an early lunch.
This boat cruise in Murchison falls takes upstream to the bottom of Murchison falls. The river gives life to the wildlife and bird life in the park. Elephants, crocodiles, hippos, water bucks and buffalo can be seen in and on the banks of the river. At the bottom of the falls, you are rewarded with spectacular views of the falls. Disembark and hike alongside the falls. The hike offer scenic views of both the Uhuru and Murchison falls. At the top of the falls, get to experience the brute force of the Nile as it is forced into the 7 meter gorge. Sprays as high as 50 meters create a mirage and a constant rainbow. Your guide will transfer you to your hotel for the night.
Day 3: Transfer to Kibale national park
Proceeding a successful wildlife expedition in Murchison falls, we will depart for Kibale national park. This scenic drive takes us through the Albert rift with amazing views of Lake Albert. We shall have a lunch break in Fort portal town before proceeding to Kibale forest. On arrival, we shall check into the lodge and recover from the drive.
Day 4: Chimpanzee trekking and crater lakes visit
Kibale forest national park is famous as a chimp trekking destination. The pristine forest however is home to another 12 primates that can be spotted on your chimpanzee trekking safari. On this particular morning, we will have an early breakfast before heading to the park headquarters for a briefing. Here, we will be given guidelines for the trek. Rangers will lead us into the forest to search for the chimps. On making contact, we will be allocated an hour to spend with them. This is a very surreal experience because of the striking similarity between the chimp and humans. After all, we share 95% of our DNA with these primates.
Observe them as they feed, groom and play with one another. Take pictures and videos following the guidelines. Other primates to encounter include; grey checked mangabeys, blue monkeys, red tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys and more. Depending on the location of the chimps, the trek may last up to 8 hours. Be sure to carry plenty of water and a packed lunch.
In the evening, you have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful landscape of Fort Portal. We will visit the different crater lakes that are found in the area. Retire at the lodge for the night.
Day 5: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth and evening game drive
On day 5 of this 8 day Uganda gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris, we will check out of Kibale national park and head for Queen Elizabeth national park. The scenic drive offers rewarding views of the Rwenzori Mountains and more crater lakes. When you arrive in Queen Elizabeth, you will check into the lodge and have a delicious lunch. Later in the afternoon, embark on an evening game drive in the kasenyi plains. Here, you will encounter lions, elephants, buffalo, hyenas, leopards, water bucks, and much more. This drive will last up to 3 hours. We shall then retire back at the lodge for the night.
Day 6: Morning game drive and transfer to Bwindi impenetrable forest
This morning game drive in Queen Elizabeth takes us into the Ishasha sector. This sector is famous for its tree climbing lions. More wildlife like topi, kobs, and buffalo can be seen on this game drive. Continue and transfer to Bwindi impenetrable forest. You will be rewarded with amazing views of the rift valleys and the terraced hills. In Bwindi impenetrable national park, check into the lodge and relax by the camp fire for the evening.
Day 7: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi
This is the highlight of this 8 day Uganda gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris, gorilla trekking. This day will commence with a warm healthy breakfast before heading to the park headquarters for a briefing. Here, you will be taken through the guidelines of gorilla trekking. In your assigned groups, you will head out to trek the different gorilla families. The trek through this lush green forest is itself a thrilling adventure. The location of the gorilla families determines how long trek takes. On making contact, you will be astonished by the beauty of these gentle giants. Observe them as they eat, play and interact with one another. Take photos and videos but with your flash mode disabled. After the trek, you will return to the lodge and relax. Later in the evening, you have the option of taking a community walk and visiting the local craft shops
Day 8: Transfer to Kampala.
On the final day of our 8 day Uganda gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris, we will check out of the lodge and depart for Kampala. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the rolling hills that are Kabale. Have a lunch break in Mbarara at Igongo cultural center before proceeding to Kampala. At Kayabwe, we will stop at the equator monument for some photos. In Kampala, your guide will drop you at your hotel or airport. This will mark the end of your 8 day Uganda gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris.

Guidelines for Gorilla trekking
- Keep a distance of 7 meters between you and the gorillas at all times.
- Keep your mask on during the encounter with the gorillas to prevent communicable diseases
- Avoid direct eye contact with the gorillas as this can be construed as intimidation
- Keep your voice low during your interaction with the gorillas
- Stay as a group during your interaction with the gorillas to avoid confusion within the gorilla family
- Do not drink or smoke in the presence of the gorillas.
