7 day Uganda gorilla trekking safari detailed itinerary

On you arrival in Uganda, our safari director will warmly receive you at the airport. Transfer to your hotel, check in and freshen up. You will then be briefed on your 7 day Uganda gorilla trekking safari. Relax at the hotel for the night in anticipation of your next day’s adventures.

Day 1: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park.

Following an early breakfast, we will depart Kampala for Queen Elizabeth national park. The park is located in the western part of Uganda bordering with DR Congo. It is located in the western rift valley and offers scenic views of the escarpments and the Rwenzori ranges. We will make our first stop at the Equator monument for a few photos before proceeding on our journey. On arrival in Queen Elizabeth, we will check into the lodge and relax for the afternoon.

Later in the evening, embark on an evening game drive on the savanna plains of Kasenyi. This sector of the park has a antelope mating ground which attracts plenty of predators. On this game drive, expect to see lions, leopards, hyenas, elephants, hippos, buffalo, kob, and many more. This drive will last up to 4 hours. After which, you will return to your lodge for the night.

Day 2; Morning game drive and afternoon boat cruise

We will begin this day of our 7 day Uganda gorilla trekking safari with an early breakfast. This is in a bid to catch the predators before they retreat into their hiding spots for the day. This game drive gives us the opportunity to see the wildlife we might have missed on the previous game drive. Relax and take in every inch of the savanna plains. Return to the lodge for an early lunch in preparation for the afternoon boat cruise.

The boat cruise in Queen Elizabeth is done on the Kazinga channel and takes you to the Mweya Peninsula. On this cruise, you will relax and enjoy the cool breeze as you explore more of the wildness. Elephants, buffalo, crocodiles and antelopes can be seen by the banks of the channel while hippos are seen in the water. With over 600 bird species, the channel is a haven for bird lovers. This adventure lasts for 2 hours after which you will return to the lodge for the evening and night.

Day 3: Transfer to Bwindi impenetrable national park

Proceeding an interesting time on the savanna plains, we will switch it up a notch by transferring to Bwindi impenetrable national park. This journey is exciting with amazing scenic views of the western rift valley. The drive will take you through the Ishasha sector of the park which is known for its tree climbing lions. Continue through the tea plantations, terraced hills to the thick impenetrable forest of Bwindi. Upon arrival, you will check into the lodge and relax for the evening.

Day 4; Gorilla trekking in Bwindi impenetrable forest.

Gorilla trekking is the highlight of any safari to Uganda. The endangered species are fascinating to watch in their natural habitat. With only 1000 mountain gorillas left in the world, Bwindi impenetrable is home to more than half of the population. On this gorilla trekking expedition, you will have an early breakfast and head to the park headquarters for a briefing. You will then be allocated gorilla families to trek. Venturing through the thick undergrowth, you will trek through the forest in search of these gorilla families. Led by a ranger, you will enjoy the adventurous trek until you encounter these gentle giants.

With just an hour to observe the gorillas, you will be amazed at the sight of these primates. Their agility as they climb up small branches, their brute strength as they pull down twigs and the cool brown stare of the silverback. Capture your perfect safari excursion with photos and videos (remember to disable the flash). Return to the park headquarters for your gorilla trekking certificates. Depending on the location of your gorilla family, gorilla trekking lasts between 3 and 8 hours. Remember to carry enough water and a packed lunch.

In the evening, you have an option of doing a community walk and interact with the locals. Support the locals by buying some souvenirs from their local markets. Or, you could remain at the lodge and relax with the sounds, smells and views of the tropical forest.

Day 5: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

This day of this 7 day Uganda gorilla trekking safari is a relaxing day with a 2-3 hour drive to Lake Bunyonyi. This lake is a lava formed lake and is the second deepest lake in Africa. The lake is surrounded by beautifully terraced hills. On arrival on the lake, you will check into the lodge and enjoy the views on the lake. In the evening, you will have a canoe cruise on the lake. This cruise offers a historical perspective of the lake and the people around it. With 29 islands, the canoe cruise takes you to the some of the islands with stunning history. Akampene Island (Punishment Island) is one of the islands to be explored. Here girls who became pregnant before marriage with left on the island as a punishment. Other islands include; Bushara, Sharp and lepers’ colony. Enjoy an alluring sunset over the lake.

Day 6: Transfer to Lake Mburo and evening game drive

As we drew close to the end of our 7 day Uganda gorilla trekking safari, we will depart Lake Bunyonyi for Lake Mburo national park. Although Lake Mburo is one of the smallest national parks in Uganda, it packs a punch when it comes to wildlife. The park is famous for its vast herds of impala and zebra. On arrival in Lake Mburo national park, we will check into the lodge enjoy a delicious lunch.

Venture out for an evening game drive in the acacia woodlands. Apart from the zebra and the impala, you will have close encounters with giraffes, topi, eland, warthogs, leopards and many more. This game drive will last up to 3 hours. Relax at the lodge by the evening camp fire.

Day 7: Morning nature walk and transfer to Kampala.

This is the last day of our 7 day Uganda gorilla trekking safari. After an early morning breakfast, we will head out for a nature walk in the park. This nature walk allows us to take a leisurely stroll amidst the wildlife in the park. After a safety briefing, we will be led to a 2 hour walk alongside amazing wildlife like eland, zebra, impala, giraffes and topi. Enjoy these close encounters with these amazing wildlife on your Uganda wildlife safari. Check out of the lodge and depart Lake Mburo for Kampala. Have a lunch stopover the equator before proceeding to Kampala. On arrival, your safari director will drop you at your hotel or airport. This will mark the end of your 7 day Uganda gorilla trekking safari.

Guidelines for Gorilla trekking

  • Keep a distance of 7 meters between you and the gorillas at all times.

  • Stay as a group during your interaction with the gorillas to avoid confusion within the gorilla family
